John Gelhard joins Resolute after serving as an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) for the State of Wisconsin from 1993 to 2025. For 14 years, ALJ Gelhard worked for the Equal Rights Division (ERD) where he presided over disputed employment law cases, conducting hearings and issuing written decisions. In the course of handling his caseload, he was called upon to make rulings on discovery disputes, pretrial motions, admissibility of evidence, and other procedural matters. He also conducted 50 to 60 mediations per year with a high rate of success. Prior to working in the Equal Rights Division, ALJ Gelhard worked for the Unemployment Compensation Division where he conducted hearings and issued written decisions in disputed unemployment cases. While at the ERD, his friendly and candid demeanor resulted in many settlements. It was not unusual for him to handle upwards of 1,000 cases per year for the Unemployment Division.

In private practice, he was involved in litigation including personal injury, criminal defense, workers’ compensation, social security disability, unemployment compensation and general civil matters. His practice involved jury trials, court trials and proceedings before administrative tribunals. As an associate for a law firm in Racine, Wisconsin, he assisted in insurance defense cases and also prosecuted cases for the Town of Mt. Pleasant.
